Topic: Teaching Note Taking and Shorthand in Fifth Grade

Question: Should note taking and shorthand be taught to fifth-grade students?

Title: “Annotated Bibliography of Research in the Teaching of Literature and the Teaching of Writing.” DJ Dieterich and RH Behm. Research in the Teaching of English (May 1984), 201-218.

Summary: Concluded that the instruction in notetaking and notetaking strategies given to grade 5 gifted children significantly improved these skills, but that teaching shorthand did not contribute additional measurable differences. MJW Taylor, 1983, 206.

Comment: I’m assuming that the notetaking skills and strategies involved notes from books and articles as well as lectures. It will also be good for listening skills. I’m intrigued by the thought of teaching shorthand to any student at any level. I never thought of it. RayS.
