Research: Types of Writing and Their Ratings

Question: Are all types of writing rated the same in essay tests?

Answer: “Among seventh graders, found that the mean scores for narrative writing were significantly higher than scores in descriptive, expository and persuasive writing.” PH Kegley. 1984.p. 196.

Comment: It’s important to know the kind of writing needed for a particular writing sample. Whereas I never worked much on narratives, and focused on expository writing, I might now, in light of this finding, spend more time on narrative writing. I note that the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) uses narrative, expository and persuasive writing. RayS.
