Topic: Holistic and Analytical Assessment of Writing

Question: What are the effects of using both holistic and analytic assessment of compositions?

Answer: “Holistic scoring requires less time and money, making it the most economic of the direct measures. Analytical scoring correlates highly with holistic ratings and provides more detailed analysis of some holistic ratings.” LR Veal and SA Hudson, 1983, 209.

Comment: Combine the two methods to produce a more accurate assessment of student writing. The holistic assessment is a general impression. The analytic is diagnostic and points out where the composition needs improvement. RayS.
